Our day started in a cemetery with Jeremiah Poope. Jeremiah Poope was our exuberant, comedic and witty tour guide of the Freedom Trail. He pulled us in with stories of bodies and bones emerging from the earth during a particularly rainy week in Boston. He effectively kept us engaged and interested in his facts of history with a constant stream of subtle jokes. We learned about the significance of the Boston Massacre and were reminded of the presence of unicorns in Boston way "back in the day." We learned about some very important and prominent figures in Boston such as wealthy competitor to George Washington, John Hancock, who is famously known for his huge signature on the Declaration of Independence. We also learned a lot about Paul Revere who popped up in the stories throughout day. Many people think Paul Revere rode the Freedom Trail yelling, "the British are coming," except that he really didn’t because he considered himself British. What he really yelled was, "the Redcoats are coming." I think our dear friend and tour guide Mr. Poope made the tour infinitely more interesting and I enjoyed myself immensely. And yes, Poope is his real name.
